Intel has announced the much awaited debut of its
8-core processor lineup – the Haswell E Extreme Edition processors.
Along with this line up Intel has also introduced the Intel X99
motherboard chipset which will support the new DDR4 RAM modules. The
processor prices range from $390 to $1000.
The flagship CPU – Intel Core i7-5960X is clocked at 3GHz and will be an 8-core/16-thread CPU thanks to hyperthreading technology. This is the first 8-core processor from Intel in the Core series lineup. Generally 8-core processors are seen on the Xeon server chips. The turbo clock speeds can go upto 3.5GHz. The new additions include support for 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes which is the same as that seen on Intel Core i7-4960X – the Ivy Bridge E flagship. Haswell E will be the first processor line up to support Thunderbolt 2 connections which is significant considering the push towards 4K technology. The Core i7-5960X will be priced at a whopping $1000 or approx Rs 60,500.
Apart from the flagship model, Intel has released two more models namely Intel Core i7-5390K and Intel Core i7-5820K, both of which are 6-core/12-thread parts. They are both clocked higher than the flagship model, with the Core i7 5930K clocked at 3.5GHz base clock / 3.7GHz turbo clock whereas the Core i7 5820K is clocked at 3.3GHz base clock / 3.6GHz turbo clock. The Intel Core i7 5930K will be priced at $594 or approx Rs 36,000 and the Intel Core i7 5820K will be priced at $396 or approx Rs 24,000.
The Haswell E processor launch marks the end of the 22nm manufacturing process. The next processor line up will be based on the 14nm Broadwell architecture which will be the 5th generation Intel Core processor line up which we can expect towards the end of the year.
