The Honda
Amaze sedan, based on the Brio hatchback platform was certainly going
to rake in numbers, given the fact the this was the company’s first
diesel engine car for the Indian auto market. Diesel vehicles have for
long held the ship staedy for many auto manufacturers here. The idea
behind introducing a new car in a new segment is primarily to compete in
an existing segment with other manufacturers. However, every once in a
while that pattern seems muddled at the start.
In case of Honda, the month of January 2013 saw the carmaker sell
2336 units of Brio and 2898 units of the Honda City. The following
month, sales volume stood at 2916 and 3271 units for both models
respectively. March seemed to be a winner for all their cars
with 3917 units of Brio sold, 3432 units of the City sedan, and 2552
units of the Honda Amaze being pre-booked and a formal launch awaited.
With the FY ending in March, and offers galore, sales are usually strong
keeping in mind impending changes in the Union budget.
April 2013 has catapulted the Honda Amaze to a winning car will sales
falling short of 5k, only barely. A record 4852 units of the Honda
Amaze compact sedan were sold. While that is progressive, Honda Brio
sales dipped to 1628 units, and Honda City sales to 1917 units. While
the Amaze will continue to be a forerunner in terms of sales volume, and
adjustments can be made to Brio production keeping in mind demand for
the Amaze, lowered demand for City variants will be a concern for the
company in the short run.

Lenovo and Kobe Bryant Team Up to Tease the P780 Phone
Fair warning, the commercial is a little bit cheesy.
We're getting quite used to celebrity endorsements in the smartphone space. Between Jessica Alba and Windows Phone, BlackBerry 10 and Alicia Keys, or Zoe Deschanel and the iPhone/Siri, it's not at all unusual to see a famous actor or single pushing a specific brand of smartphone or smartphone technology. Unfortunately, Kobe fans looking for a piece of the latest Kobe-approved product may have to wait a while, as it seems this phone might be China-only for now.
Lenovo has recruited basketball legend Kobe Bryant to plug an upcoming device. Engadget points to a new behind-the-scenes spot featuring Bryant that hit the web this week.
The ad sees Kobe bouncing a basketball around set before plugging the Lenovo P780. A commercial for the device (this one from Lenovo's own YouTube channel) suggests that this phone is based on an Intel CPU. Other rumors include a 5-inch display and a 4,000mAh battery.

Targeted cyber attacks growing among businesses
PUNE: Symantec
Corp's 'Internet Security Threat Report, Volume 18 (ISTR)' recently
revealed that India has seen a 280% increase in bot infections that is
continuing to spread to a larger number of emerging cities here. With
the prevalence of such infections, it is not surprising that the country
accounts for nearly 15% of global bot-net spam, responsible for
disseminating an estimated 280 million spam messages per day worldwide.
In addition, the report highlights a 42% surge during 2012 in global targeted attacks, as compared to the prior year. Designed to steal intellectual property, these targeted cyber espionage attacks are increasingly hitting small businesses, which are the target of 31% of these attacks across the world. Small businesses are attractive targets and a stepping stone to ultimately reaching larger companies.

Apple's new Berlin store: fans' ardour remains undimmed
Despite suggestions that Apple is losing its cool factor, those fans at the opening of its new Berlin store were as enthusiastic as ever, writes Jeevan Vasagar
As thousands of fans queued around the block, with the most diehard sleeping
on the pavement for a chance to be the first inside its new store in Berlin, Apple
appeared to have lost none of its retail magic at its latest opening
yesterday.
“I was here at 9pm last night,” said Jan Teuner, 46, a civil servant. “It was
cold and the ground was hard. But I wanted to be first because I love Apple
and the products are perfect.”
Opening in a listed building which formerly housed a cinema, the new store is
Apple’s biggest outlet in Germany, where it has 10 other shops. The façade
of the building on Kurfuerstendamm, Berlin’s main shopping street, is styled
like a Greek temple. Inside, iPhones, iPads and MacBooks were on display on
tables made of German oak.
The crowd queuing outside was youthful, largely male, and united in its
adoration.
“Apple’s prices may be high but they are worth it,” said Adrian Post, 22, a
hospital worker who had travelled in from nearby Potsdam. “I’ve just come to
look. I’m not going to buy anything today, but I’d like one of those very
flat laptops.”
Kim Druschky, 22, who is training to be a childcare worker, said: “I’m here
because it’s stylish – and for the T-shirts.” The first 4,500 customers
received limited edition T-shirts with the slogan Apple Store
Kurfuerstendamm Berlin, handed out by cheering, whooping staff who greeted
them at the front of the store.
Until now, Miss Druschky has been ordering online. “I’m glad there’s a shop now – the customer service is better,” she said.
The new Berlin store has opened in a building once occupied by the Filmbuehne Wien – a cinema with a reputation for screening artistically ambitious films. The cinema’s grand interior – chandeliers, moulded ceilings and parquet floors – has been restored, while the screening room has been converted into a theatre which will host talks and concerts.
Apple's profits fell, for the first time in a decade, in results published last week. It posted quarterly revenue of $43.6bn and net profits of $9.5bn, compared to revenue of $39.2bn and net profit of $11.6bn in the same quarter a year ago,
Latest quarterly results for tablets showed that Apple’s iPad was still in first place, though its market share slipped to 39.6pc while Samsung's share grew to 17.9pc. The tablet market grew overall by 142.4pc year-on-year, according to market research firm IDC.
In the US, Apple has trademarked the glass storefronts, panelled facades, and the oblong tables and wall-mounted video screens inside its shops. Its new Berlin store has a re-designed ‘Genius Bar’, with experts sitting on stools alongside customers rather than facing them. It also has a dedicated space for business customers, in a high-ceilinged room once occupied by the cinema’s café.

Samsung launches an 8-inch Galaxy Note 510 tablet in India at Rs 30,900
NEW DELHI: Aiming to increase its presence in the Indian tablet market, Korean consumer electronics major Samsung today launched a 8-inch tablet, Galaxy Note 510, which the firm claims will enhance the multi-media experience.
The 3G-enabled tablet is powered by Android Jelly Bean OS and runs on 1.6 GHz quad-core processor with 2 GB (RAM), Samsung Electronics said in a release.
Talk of the Day -- MediaTek unveils new smartphone platform
It is the world's first dual-core SoC (system-on-a-chip) with integrated Wi-Fi, FM, GPS and Bluetooth functions targeted at the entry segment and also enables a cost-effective 4-layer PCB design, the company said in a statement Thursday.
Hundreds of new smartphone models featuring this new platform would be released by June, MediaTek said.
The cost optimized new chip will help drive down entry-level smartphone prices and stimulate consumers around the world to change their smartphone models, it noted.
The new MT6572 also integrates advanced multi-mode 3D Graphics, support for up to HD 720p video playback and record, 5MP camera, MediaTek said.
Merrill Lynch forecast in its latest research report that MediaTek's shipments would reach 200 million units in the second quarter of this year and its Q2 revenues would post a 15 to 20 percent growth.
The financial institution also estimated MediaTek's Q2 gross margin at 43 percent and raised its share target price to NT$370.
Meanwhile, local media reports said Taiwan's Lite-On technology group has emerged as a major component supplier to the world's five largest smartphone vendors -- Apple, HTC, Samsung, Huawei and ZTE.
Foreign reports also said Friday that Intel Corp., the world's largest semiconductor chip maker, has struck a foundry deal to build ICs and SoCs for Microsemi Corp. using its 22-nanometer FinFET process.
Microsemi, a major supplier of a broad range of chips for communications, defense, aerospace and industrial markets, is Intel's fifth publicly disclosed foundry client.
Intel's four other foundry customers are network processor provider Netronome and FPGA (field-programmable gate array) chip vendors Altera, Achronix and Tabula.
The Intel-Microsemi foundry deal was signed in January but was not made public until May 1, the reports said.
Microsemi once partnered with Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) in developing 65-nm embedded flash process technology.
UMC would not comment on the deal, saying only that the company has spared no effort in developing advanced semiconductor manufacturing process technologies.
Industry analysts said the Intel-Microsemi deal indicates that Intel, the longtime PC chipset giant, is stepping up its bid to erode the market shares of Taiwan's two largest contract chip foundries -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and UMC.
There are also rumors in the media that Intel may buy longtime foe Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), a fabless memory chip supplier. Were the deal to happen, it could be a harsh blow for TSMC because AMD has been one of TSMC's key customers.
The following are excerpts from local media coverage of intensified competition in chip foundry business and MediTek's new smarphone chip:
Economic Daily News:
TSMC dominated a 49.5 percent share of the global chip foundry business in 2012, according to a Gartner research report.
But Intel's active foray into the foundry market could gradually change the trade map, market analysts said.
Microsemi said in a press statement May 1 that the foundry deal has allowed it to engage with customers and begin designs utilizing Intel's 22-nm process technology with product delivery expected to begin in late 2014 or early 2015.
Intel reportedly has several more undisclosed foundry customers. Media reports said Intel may be working on a deal to make mobile processors for Apple, which is trying to cut its foundry reliance on archrival Samsung. (May 3, 2013).
United Evening News:
Lite-On Technology Group's fully owned subsidiary Lite-On Mobile reportedly has entered Apple Inc.'s supply chain by providing mechanical parts for iPhones.
The company would not comment on the report. It said instead that Lite-On Mobile has won orders from well-known handset brands and that the company will post profits this year.
In addition to providing camera lens for HTC and Samsung, Lite-On has also successfully won orders from all major Chinese smartphone vendors, including Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo and Xiaomi, industry sources said. (May 3, 2013).
Google adds remote desktop Hangouts to Google+
(Credit:
Google)
Some people are simply more tech savvy than their friends and family
and often end up offering advice on the ins and outs of computer use.
But, this can be difficult when people don't live in the same cityGoogle is attempting to help out folks in these situations with a new Google + Hangout feature. The Web giant announced
Thursday that it is rolling out a Hangouts remote desktop, which is
powered by the same technology as the Chrome Remote Desktop. The feature
lets users video chat while troubleshooting.
"Hangouts Remote Desktop lets you help others by controlling their computer remotely (with their permission, of course)," Google software engineer Daniel Caiafa wrote in a blog post Thursday. "And because you're both in a Hangout, you can talk with and see each other during the session."
While this is a feature that most people probably won't use all of the time, it could be quite helpful in certain situations.
Renault Duster beats Mahindra Scorpio, becomes highest selling SUV in India
The success to a company can come really fast and Duster shows it
amply. Renault Duster has beaten Mahindra Scorpio to become highest
selling SUV in India in a very short span of time
From being a newly launched SUV till some time back to becoming the highest selling SUV of the country, Renault Duster has indeed come a long way. The four wheels that has earned the name ‘modern compact SUV’ of India, is contributing towards 80 percent of the car makers total sales taking place in the country.
Selling like hot cakes, Duster has done a world of good to the Indian subsidiary of Renault, something which none of its earlier ventures have been able to do. Launched against the arch rival Mahindra Scorpio, Renault Duster has outnumbered it be selling 6,300 units as against the 4,700 Scorpios being sold thereby topping the sales chart in the month of April alone.
Flying literally out of the showrooms, a large number of SUV owners can be seen shifting towards Duster. Commenting on the achievement made by the Duster, Sumit Sawhney, executive director, marketing and sales at Renault India, said: “The Duster is a very well accepted product in the market. This gives us the confidence for a better performance. We have made additions to the product which has helped us achieve incremental volumes”.
Apart from taking over Mahindra Scorpio, has also surpassed Ford and Volkswagen. In 21013 alone Renault has been able to sell 5,362 units of Duster, registering the highest auto sales growth in India in April 2013. From selling a mere 615 units in April 2012, the company sold a total of 6,314 units in April 2013, registering a 10 fold increase in sales.
Renault India sold a total of 5,362 units of their Duster SUV besides another 545 units of Scala, the midsized sedan, 358 units of Pulse hatchback, 39 units of Fluence sedan and 10 units of the Koleos SUV. Renault India, who has collaborated with Nissan, has a production capacity of 4 lakh units per annum at their Oragadam manufacturing facility near Chennai. Keeping in mind sales of both companies per month, the plant is well suited to meet production requirements for months to come. The company also has over 100 outlets across India.
Apart from topping the charts, the Renault India has set a benchmark for others to follow. In fact Duster was awarded with the TNS Voice of Customer awards for highest level of customer satisfaction in its segment during the past year. This award is based on TNS Automotive Four Wheeler Total Customer Satisfaction Study which takes into account customer satisfaction from all major vehicle owners with special emphasis on cost of ownership, product quality and delivery process.
It may be recalled that Mahindra shared a joint venture company with Renault till April 2010 after which the Mumbai-based company bought the French company’s stake. The JV made the Logan sedan (now renamed Verito) from a plant in Nashik. Meanwhile, Nissan is expected to launch its own variant of the SUV based on the Duster platform to cash in on the growing demand for SUVs in India. Last year, the utility vehicle segment recorded a jump of 52 per cent to 553,000 units, compared with 363,000 units sold in the previous year.

BlackBerry services suffer outage in India
BlackBerry customers across India and some parts of the world were unable to send emails or messages via BBM.
NEW DELHI: BlackBerry
customers across India and some parts of the world were not able to
send emails or messages via BlackBerry Messenger as the Canadian
company's services were disrupted for a few hours on Friday.
Disgruntled BlackBerry customers poured their outrage on Twitter while demanding answers from the handset maker. "Blackberry please, please tell me we're not experiencing another Blackberry outage. Is it just me?" @priceecsg was quoted by Outrage Tracker on the social networking site. "BlackBerry outage, started 3 hours ago. No word from BlackBerry," @NexusFandom said while another customer informed, "There is a BIS outage in Toronto so my BlackBerry is not working right now."
Other Twitter users added that BlackBerry's enterprise services in some areas were non-functional as well.
BlackBerry said that the services were down only for some time and the company was working on restoring connectivity. "Some of our customers may be experiencing issues with BlackBerry services. All relevant support teams are working to resolve the issue. We apologise to any customers who may be affected," the company said when the issue was highlighted by customers on Twitter.
The temporary snag comes at a time when BlackBerry is trying hard to gain back market share with new devices - Z10 and Q10 - packed with features and the refurbished BlackBerry enterprise services. Smartphone maker Apple has pipped BlackBerry in developed markets where it used to enjoy a large fan following till some years ago. The handset maker has since been focusing on developing markets like India with more affordable handsets for a large youth population.
BlackBerry suffered a three-day global service outage in October 2011 that frustrated millions of customers worldwide that forced the company to make substantial improvements in quality of services.
In an updated statement on Friday, Varghese Thomas, director - corporate communications - India & Greater China Region said, "As an update, we can confirm that our technical teams have addressed the issue and BlackBerry services are returning to normal levels. We apologise to customers for any inconvenience. We take all service issues - no matter how small - very seriously and through constant monitoring and investigation we aim to ensure our network meets customer expectations."

Wickedleak Wammy Desire 2 price in India is Rs. 9,999
Wickedleak has launched the Wammy Desire 2 in India and it has smeared the tablet
with a price tag of Rs. 9,999. This retail value has however been
calculated without taking taxes into consideration, after counting that,
its sum total stands to be Rs. 10,398.
The company will be selling the Wickedleak Wammy Desire 2 in two variants; one stocked with the Ice Cream Sandwich OS and the other with Jelly Bean. Probably because the latter model rocks the beta version of Android 4.2 out of the box, the retail value of both the units happens to be the same.
An IPS 5-point touch screen which scales up to 7 inches can be seen dominating the front panel and sharing room with a VGA webcam. On flipping the device over, a 3MP camera can be spotted lodged onto its flip side.
The tablet gets its high out of a quad core Exynos 4 processor, which qualifies its Jelly Bean variant to compete against the likes of the Acer Iconia A1 and the Zync Quad 8.0. Also, a Mali 400 GPU along with 1GB of DDR3 RAM grabs a spot in the slate’s interiors.
As far as memory is concerned, users should be able to store content up to 8GB internally. If they find themselves demanding additional hoarding space, they could always slip a microSD card of up to 32GB into the integrated expansion port.
Other highlights of the tablet cover connectivity features such as Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS and Bluetooth 2.1 as well as the inbuilt 3,300mAh battery. Sadly, the option in terms of color schemes has been restricted to white only.
The manufacturer has put the Wickedleak Wammy Desire 2 up for pre-order in India and has stated that the first stock will arrive on May 15. The company has furthermore presented buyers with a deal that lets them collect loyalty points equivalent to the price excluding taxes. This in turn will get converted into a Rs. 100 voucher.
Here are a bunch of the tablet’s significant specifications:
- 7-inch IPS capacitive touch screen
- 1,280 x 800 pixel resolution
- Android Ice Cream Sandwich or Android Jelly Bean (Beta) OS
- Quad core Exynos 4 processor
- Mali 400 graphics
- 1GB of DDR3 RAM
- 8GB internal memory, expandable up to 32GB
- 2MP primary and 0.3MP secondary cameras
- 3,300mAh battery
