The success to a company can come really fast and Duster shows it
amply. Renault Duster has beaten Mahindra Scorpio to become highest
selling SUV in India in a very short span of time
From being a newly launched SUV till some time back to becoming the highest selling SUV of the country, Renault Duster has indeed come a long way. The four wheels that has earned the name ‘modern compact SUV’ of India, is contributing towards 80 percent of the car makers total sales taking place in the country.
Selling like hot cakes, Duster has done a world of good to the Indian subsidiary of Renault, something which none of its earlier ventures have been able to do. Launched against the arch rival Mahindra Scorpio, Renault Duster has outnumbered it be selling 6,300 units as against the 4,700 Scorpios being sold thereby topping the sales chart in the month of April alone.
Flying literally out of the showrooms, a large number of SUV owners can be seen shifting towards Duster. Commenting on the achievement made by the Duster, Sumit Sawhney, executive director, marketing and sales at Renault India, said: “The Duster is a very well accepted product in the market. This gives us the confidence for a better performance. We have made additions to the product which has helped us achieve incremental volumes”.
Apart from taking over Mahindra Scorpio, has also surpassed Ford and Volkswagen. In 21013 alone Renault has been able to sell 5,362 units of Duster, registering the highest auto sales growth in India in April 2013. From selling a mere 615 units in April 2012, the company sold a total of 6,314 units in April 2013, registering a 10 fold increase in sales.
Renault India sold a total of 5,362 units of their Duster SUV besides another 545 units of Scala, the midsized sedan, 358 units of Pulse hatchback, 39 units of Fluence sedan and 10 units of the Koleos SUV. Renault India, who has collaborated with Nissan, has a production capacity of 4 lakh units per annum at their Oragadam manufacturing facility near Chennai. Keeping in mind sales of both companies per month, the plant is well suited to meet production requirements for months to come. The company also has over 100 outlets across India.
Apart from topping the charts, the Renault India has set a benchmark for others to follow. In fact Duster was awarded with the TNS Voice of Customer awards for highest level of customer satisfaction in its segment during the past year. This award is based on TNS Automotive Four Wheeler Total Customer Satisfaction Study which takes into account customer satisfaction from all major vehicle owners with special emphasis on cost of ownership, product quality and delivery process.
It may be recalled that Mahindra shared a joint venture company with Renault till April 2010 after which the Mumbai-based company bought the French company’s stake. The JV made the Logan sedan (now renamed Verito) from a plant in Nashik. Meanwhile, Nissan is expected to launch its own variant of the SUV based on the Duster platform to cash in on the growing demand for SUVs in India. Last year, the utility vehicle segment recorded a jump of 52 per cent to 553,000 units, compared with 363,000 units sold in the previous year.
